Mash it up...

This weeks lecture and tutorial was focussed on API(Application Programming Interface) and Mashup. The idea behind this is to combine diferent aspects of data together to create something new and different. API's let you piggyback of existing services, allowing you to make something thats probably a whole lot better than if you built it from scratch, while also saving you a shitload of time. Many services such as twitter have bulit in public API's that allow you to expand the way you use the service. It's about combining services to find new ways of doing things, sharing skills and knowledge to achieve a cool and new outcome.

In the tutorial we looked at the pipes program. I was able to create a feed of many different sites I visit, this all appeared in a single page, more simple than going from site to site thats for sure.

I've also been thinking a little about Project A, I'm undecided about which direction I want to take. I can't yet decide whether a reference page or an online exhibition would suit my purpose better.

Hyper What?

Hyper Text Markup Langauge, known to most under the acronym HTML. The thought of actually writing some HTML was somewhat daunting to me at first, isn't that what computer whiz kids in glasses with absolutely no social skills do? Well it's not as hard as it seems, it's just like......learning a new language.

HTML uses tags to describe the structure of a document of text, telling the browser what text is a link, or a paragraph or list etc.

We were also introduced to CCS - Cascading Style Sheets. If the HTML is the core infomation the browser needs, then the CSS is what tells the browser how to present the infomation, the layout, colours, style of text etc.

I found an interesting CCS tutorial site here. I've also been searching around for filmmaking tips for beginners and came found this pretty neat website.

Blogging Success?

What makes a blog a good blog? Or a great blog? By doing all the things I've yet to do to this blog I presume. Actually updating it frequently would be a good start I'm sure. Links, videos and pictures are all good additions to spice up an otherwise mundane blog post, so I feel there is no better time than now to throw a video in here. Why? Because I can.

It isn't completely irrelevant, as it does tie into the work i'm doing for Project A, which I think will be on Metal Gear Solid, though still undecided on a reference site or an online exhibition.

Choices

I recently came across an interesting blog post from a woman named Carrie Gouskos, who is/was a producer on the semi recently released Warhammer Online.

I suggest reading that post before doing anything else

Carrie's Post

Ok read it? Downloaded the game? Played it? Good.

I know I'm pretty much just regurgitating what she said, but that is pretty much what 99% of blogs do on the internet. Anyway, it made me think about the choices we have in life, how taking one path can close off another forever, and where I would be today if my life consisted of several different choices. It's quite possible I wouldn't be sitting here writing this blog. We only have a certain amount of time in this world and a certain amount of choices to go along with it.

Some people decided on marriage, kids and the white picket fence, which is perfectly acceptable. That's really not for me though, I have this want, this need to achieve something. Something "that matters" as Carrie said, I'm just not sure how i'll get there......if my choices will get me there......actually doing some work wouldn't hurt.

Blogging Beginnings

Hello there....

I've never been much of a blogger, well actually.... I've never been a blogger at all. I didn't give in and join the blogging masses by choice mind you, I .....kinda had to for my Networked Media Production unit. Not participating in the blogging experience would mean.....I would kinda fail, and that would be....kinda not good.......kinda. Having said that, I'm going to approach this task of chronicling all my thoughts, hopes, dreams etc into this cyber medium with enthusiasm, at least in week two i am, hopefully that keeps up all semester. The best thing about the blogging lifestyle in my opinion, is that it can be done without pants, at home under the influence of copious amounts of caffeine, I'm all for that.

So anyway, I'm currently at the University Of Canberra studying Media Arts and Production. So far it's been a pretty exciting and positive experience, even if it seems slightly overwhelming. I'm doing this course because I want to be a filmmaker, hopefully this will set me on the right path, or some path anyway, the path over the last few weeks has been extremely enjoyable thus far.

So I guess i will use this blog to sum up my thoughts on whats happening in the internet media world, whether that be film/videogames/music etc and also to reflect on the rad stuff we'll be doing in Media Production. Yes, I just said rad, that word is coming back in a big way. Anyways, until next time.......well next time maybe i'll come up with a witty sign off signature......maybe.
